Conner’s Wine wins unprecedented 8 medals at 2010 International WineMaker Competition!
Building on our 2008 win of 5 medals, and our 2009 win on 6 medals, we’ve just won an unprecedented 8 more medals at the 2010 competition, bringing our total medal count to a whopping nineteen in just 3 short years!
From April 16 to 18, 2010, a record total of 4,508 different wines were judged at the Equinox Resort in Manchester, Vermont.  The 2010 edition of the WineMaker International
Amateur Wine Competition once again represented the largest and most diverse collection of amateur wines ever assembled under one roof. In fact, this year’s competition was the largest wine competition of its kind in the world.
The 4,508 entries arrived from hobby winemakers living throughout North America in all 50 American states and 8 Canadian provinces and as far away as Spain, Turkey and Australia. Over the course of three days, experienced judging panels worked through 796 flights, examining each wine using the UC-Davis 20-point wine scale evaluating appearance, aroma, taste, aftertaste and overall impression. The wines were entered in 50 different categories and included an astonishing array of varietals and wine styles. Kit wines competed alongside fresh-grape entries in this blind tasting.
According to the judgment of this international panel of distinguished wine connoisseurs, Conner’s Wine Cellar has proven for the 3rd straight year that we not only make the best tasting, most aromatic and tantalizing wine in the Fraser Valley, but we’re among the top 10% of non-commercial wine makers in the world!

Puglia Italy Negroamaro Primitivo $175/kit

Hailing from the “heel of the Italian boot”, Puglia is a peninsula of limestone dividing the Adriatic Sea from the Ionian Sea. While this region would generally be considered too far south and therefore too hot to grow good quality wine grapes, the constant winds from the Mediterranean help to cool the vines creating lush, ripe and intense fruit.
The wine itself is very dark, rustic and intense, with dried cherries, black plum, sweet vanilla and a slight
herbaceous quality. This wine is well structured with firm tannins from the American Oak Spiral and Primitivo GenuWine Winery Dried Grape Skins.

Ginger Mojito

3 oz Loquat Ginger Pinot Gris
1 oz Spiced Rum
1 oz Lime Juice
Ginger ale
6 Mint Leaves
3 Slivers of Fresh Ginger
Mint Sprig

In a tall glass muddle mint leaves, lime juice and fresh ginger. Add Loquat Ginger Pinot Gris, rum
and ice. Strain into cocktail glass. Top with ginger ale & garnish with mint sprig.

4 oz Gold Kiwi Pomelo Sauvignon Blanc
1 oz Citrus Vodka
1/4 oz Kiwi Simple Syrup
Kiwi Slice for Garnish

Kiwi Simple syrup

For Kiwi Simple Syrup: Combine 1 part sugar with 1 part water and 1 sliced 1 Kiwi. Bring to a boil and
let simmer for 10 mins. Cool. Add Gold Kiwi Pomelo Sauvignon Blanc, ice and vodka in a cocktail shaker. Shake well. Strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with a slice of kiwi

Sizzling Sunset

3 oz Blackcurrant White Merlot
1/2 oz Crème de Cassis
1/2 oz Melon Liqueur
1 oz Cranberry Juice
Splash of Sprite or Soda Water

Shake Blackcurrant White Merlot, Crème De Cassis, Melon Liqueur and cranberry juice with ice in a
cocktail shaker. Strain into cocktail glass. Top with sprite or soda water.

Summer Recipe and Wine Pairing!

Spicy Thai Chicken Wings with Mango Salad paired with
Cellar Classic Winery Series French Grenache Syrah

Ingredients

Spicy Thai Chicken Wings

20 chicken wings
1 teaspoon cracked black pepper
2 teaspoons ginger, freshly grated
1 tablespoon garlic, freshly chopped
1 tablespoon palm sugar, grated
1 tablespoon soy sauce
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons lime juice
1 tablespoon chili garlic sauce to taste
6 lime wedges to garnish

Mango Salad

3 medium ripe mangoes
2 teaspoons garlic, minced
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, roughly chopped
2 teaspoons fresh ginger, finely chopped
Juice of 1 lime
Sugar to taste (if desired)

Directions

Spicy Thai Chicken Wings

1.Rinse chicken wings with cold water and pat dry. Place wings in a large glass bowl.

2.In a separate bowl combine pepper, ginger, garlic, palm sugar, soy sauce, vegetable oil, lime juice and chili garlic sauce and stir to evenly combine. Add the wings and toss evenly with the marinade. Place the wings in the refrigerator and allow them to marinate for a minimum of 2 hours and a maximum of overnight.

3.When ready to bake the wings, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

4.Place the wings on a baking tray and bake for 20 minutes, turning them half way through. Wings are done when they look shiny, golden brown and have a bit of a crispy edge around them.

5.Serve with your favourite hot sauce.

Mango Salad

1.Remove the peel from the mango and cut into 1/4 inch dice. Add to a medium glass bowl.

2.Add the garlic, cilantro, ginger and lime juice and stir to combine to evenly distribute the flavours. Season to taste with sugar.

3. Chill well before serving.

Serve Spicy Thai Chicken Wings with the mango salad and a glass (or two) of Cellar Classic Winery Series Grenache Syrah. The spiciness of the chicken wings are the perfect compliment to the fruit notes of the Grenache.


Beat the HST!

As you’re most likely aware, the 12% HST tax comes into effect on July 1st.
First the good news: Wine and Beer kits are still 100% tax exempt!

Unfortunately though, our Vintner fee is now fully taxable, and to make things even more complicated, we now have to charge HST on corks, labels, and shrink tops – even though we include them free with every service charge.

To this end, effective July 1st, we regrettably have no choice but to increase our service fee from $40 to $42 to cover our our increased cork, label & shrink top costs, as well, the service fee will be subject to $4.62 in HST.

Thankfully this is a relatively small increase, which translates to about 15 cents per bottle.


Don’t forget to start your perfectly aged holiday wines!?!?

Yes, you read correctly. In order to have any of our premium 6 week wines kits perfectly aged for Christmas, you need to start them soon. In fact, if you put on a Cru Select Premium Wine Kit today, it will have 5 months of aging in the bottle before you serve them to your friends and family (or give them as gifts) during the Christmas holidays.

Recommended aging time for most of our Premium 6-week wine kits is 3-6 months.
